Jakobson and Lotz (1949) characterize [continuous<\/a>] phonemes with a \u201cnon-intermitted airstream\u201d and as phonemes that \u201cpossess no vocalic feature\u201d (Jakobson & Lotz 1949:430). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The feature [continuous] was introduced to differentiate fricatives from explosives (Jakobson & Lotz 1949:430). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jakobson and Lotz (1949) introduce the opposition [continuous] vs. [intercepted<\/a>]. Though they do not define [continuousness], it is used synonymously with the feature [continuous] and should be understood under the same terms. The feature was quickly abandoned after its introduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
